Where to Find Plants for Your Garden Locally

Nurseries and Garden Centers in the North Poconos and Hazleton Area

By Joey Lynn Walko May 27, 2020

If someone were to ask me what I would do with one million dollars my answer would definitely have to do with gardening, plants, and greenhouses. I would love to have multiple greenhouses and huge gardens throughout our property. For me, there’s something extremely satisfying and relaxing about gardening. I love the feeling of cool dirt in my hands and the smell of the earth while digging in the sunshine. It’s an extraordinary feeling to start something from a seedling and watch it blossom and grow over the next few weeks into a beautiful flower or delicious fruits and vegetables.

I love growing flowers like bee balm and butterfly bushes to help out the pollinators and supply some nectar to these intricate little creatures. Each time we have a new visitor to our plants we research the insect as a family to learn more about its life span, food sources, and many other interesting facts. We grow dill specifically for Eastern Black Swallowtail butterflies to lay their eggs upon and then we create habitats in old fish tanks for the caterpillars so we can observe the process of metamorphosis. Once the pupa hatches we free the butterflies and watch them flutter away to a new destination. It’s one of the most beautiful moments to watch a butterfly’s first flight.

I always shop at our local nurseries and garden stores so I can support small businesses. The employees are knowledgeable about the plants they are selling and welcome any questions I may have about a certain plant. We are lucky to have a few to choose from in our area offering seeds, flowers, vegetables, herbs, and fruits. If it’s your first time visiting them, please let them know you heard about them from Macaroni Kid North Poconos/Hazleton. Also, if you know of a nursery or garden store in our area that is not listed below, please send their information to joeyw@macaronikid.com and I will add them.
